Project Kenny

Project Kenny, supported by a $50,000 Glioblastoma Research Organization grant, pioneers the first fully implantable, rechargeable Tumor Treating Fields (TTF) device aimed at delivering 24/7 therapy without external hardware. The work builds on Dr. Shane Shahestrani’s laboratory finding that specific magnetic-field frequencies produced by novel magnetic emitters significantly suppress glioblastoma cell growth, offering fresh hope for patients facing this aggressive cancer.

Dr. Shane Shahrestani, MD, PhD is a neurosurgery resident at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center whose work bridges cutting-edge bioengineering and compassionate patient care.

After earning his PhD and MS in Medical Engineering from Caltech (2021) for developing a portable “metal-detector-for-blood” sensor to expedite stroke diagnosis, he completed his MD at the Keck School of Medicine of USC (2023).

Dr. Shahrestani has authored more than 110 peer-reviewed papers, is a co-inventor on 10+ patents, and co-founded StrokeDx, the MedTech Innovator 2023 Global Competition champion. His efforts have attracted nearly $10 million in funding—including a recent $5 million round led by DigiTx Partners—to expand neuro-diagnostic access in low-resource settings. His work at StrokeDx has been internationally recognized, and he was included on the 2025 Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the category of Science.

Committed to innovation with empathy, Dr. Shahrestani strives to translate engineering advances into real-world neurosurgical solutions—one device, one patient, and one breakthrough at a time.
