Leveraging Wearable Technology to Monitor Ketogenic Diet Adherence

This project was funded as a result of our collaboration with the Dolphins Cancer Challenge and Bonhams during the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix.

About The Project

In collaboration with Sylvester Cancer Center, this support will fund a pilot study testing whether wearable technology can help patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma follow a specialized ketogenic diet alongside standard treatment.

Early studies and small clinical trials show this diet is safe when used with standard care, and some suggest it may help slow disease progression and improve patients outcomes. Through real-time feedback on the body’s metabolism, these devices will help patients stay on track while allowing researchers to better understand impacts on weight, energy levels, overall quality of life, and tumor response.

By combining nutritional therapy with user-friendly technology, the research aims to generate early evidence on whether improving adherence can translate into better patient experiences and outcomes. If successful, this approach could inform larger clinical trials and introduce a more personalized, supportive way to complement treatment for patients facing this aggressive disease.

"Nutrition has the power to play an important role in health, and we're proud to contribute our expertise and resources to research that could help shape future standards of care."

Ideal Nutrition Supports Glioblastoma Research Through Meal Donation Partnership

Ideal Nutrition is proud to support a groundbreaking research study led by Drs. Ruham Nasany and Michael Ivan at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, exploring the role of ketogenic nutrition in patients newly diagnosed with glioblastoma.

As part of the 12-week study, Leveraging Wearable Technology to Monitor Ketogenic Diet Adherence in Newly Diagnosed Glioblastoma Patients Undergoing Standard-of-Care Treatment, Ideal Nutrition will donate chef-prepared ketogenic meals for 10 participants. The contribution includes three meals per day, seven days a week, delivered directly to patients' homes, with an estimated in-kind value of more than $25,000.

"We're honored to support Dr. Nasany and Ivan as well as the team at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center who are advancing research that has the potential to improve the lives of patients facing glioblastoma," said Wolfgang Brunet, Chief Executive Officer of Ideal Nutrition. "Nutrition has the power to play an important role in health, and we're proud to contribute our expertise and resources to research that could help shape future standards of care."

Project Investigators

Dr. Michael Ivan Glibolastoma Research Organization

Dr. Michael E. Ivan

Dr. Michael E. Ivan is a brain tumor and skull base neurosurgeon at the University of Miami/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he serves as Director of Research for the Brain Tumor Institute and Co-Leader of the Neuro-Oncology Site Disease Group.

Dr. Ivan’s clinical practice focuses on the surgical treatment of gliomas, including glioblastoma, with an emphasis on maximizing safe tumor resection while preserving neurocognitive function. He also leads a brain tumor research laboratory focused on glioma invasion, tumor progression, and the development of novel strategies to improve outcomes for patients with malignant brain tumors.

Dr. Ivan has a strong interest in innovation, wearable technology, digital health, and technology-enabled patient care. His work incorporates advanced neuroimaging, machine learning, connectomics, novel surgical technologies, and wearable devices to improve brain tumor treatment, survivorship, and longitudinal patient monitoring.

Dr. Ivan completed his neurosurgical residency and postdoctoral fellowship in glioblastoma research at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by a surgical neuro-oncology fellowship at the University of Miami.

Dr. Ruhan Nassany Glibolastoma Research Organization

Dr. Ruham Nasany

Dr. Ruham Nasany is a neuro-oncologist at the University of Miami/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, where she serves as the Director of the Inpatient Neuro-Oncology Service and the Co-Leader of the Neuro-Oncology Site Disease Group.

Dr. Nasany treats Gliomas including Glioblastoma with a focus on treatment methods that maximize the quality of life of her patients and minimize their treatment-related toxicities.

She also has a special interest in the use of immune-mediated treatment modalities and conducts research studying their role in primary and secondary brain tumors.

Dr. Nasany completed her Neuro-Oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, NY. Prior to that, she completed her Neurology residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University, NY.
